Suswa Soila Girls Rescue Centre (SUSWA) was established in 2005 in the heart of the Rift Valley, Kenya. The project is a refuge and educational facility for Maasai girls at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early arranged marriage – still common practice and tradition in the Maasai community of Kenya.
With the co-operation of the local Chiefs and community elders, SUSWA provides the girls with a safe environment to live, as well as a high quality education as an alternative path to FGM and early marriage – giving them the chance to empower and change their lives and those of generations to come. In all cases, the girls’ parents/guardians have given their permission for their daughter to embark on this new way of life.
The project has grown significantly over the years and now supports up to 140 girls, aged between 7 and 18, both within Suswa and also former Suswa pupils now attending secondary school and university.
SUSWA is run as a partnership between Kenya Children’s Homes (KCH) and the local community of Suswa.
