Statement

21 January 2023

Kenya Children’s Homes has been made aware of malicious allegations made against Dame Ann Gloag, our founder. Whilst we cannot comment on any ongoing investigation, we support Dame Ann and her decision to vigorously defend herself against these damaging claims. We will continue its work helping thousands of children across Kenya.

KCH Update - COVID-19

30 March 2020

Dear Friends and Supporters

We wanted to give you an update on our projects in Kenya which have been affected by the ongoing and rapidly changing situation with COVID-19.

Since the first recorded case in Kenya on 13 March, the Kenyan Government has imposed a series of measures across the country that have impacted all citizens and businesses.  These measures include school closures and movement restrictions that have affected our projects in Kenya.

We are following all government advice and have implemented our own additional measures in order to best protect our staff and the children we serve.

Kenya Children’s Home (Thomas Barnardo House) continues to provide care for our children and babies and is on ‘lockdown’ with restrictions on staff movements and no visitors.  Following government instruction, where it has been possible for children to return to live with extended family members/guardians during this time, we have facilitated that and are in regular contact with those families/guardians.

The Jonathan Gloag Academy is closed, as is the school at Soila Maasai Girls Rescue Centre at Suswa (SUSWA).  We are providing online learning where possible.

SUSWA continues as a home for Maasai girls, providing shelter and welfare as normal and is also on ‘lockdown’ with restrictions on movement and no visitors.

We continue to provide support to the children in our Outreach and Butterfly projects and will resume face-to-face visits as soon as we are allowed.

We managed to evacuate all our international volunteers before flight restrictions were imposed and they are now back home with their families.

The UK office staff are all working from home and continuing to provide full support to our Kenya team as normal.

Like everyone, we are constantly adapting to the ever-changing situation with COVID-19 and will keep you updated if there are any further major developments.

Please be assured, the children in our care remain our top priority and we are taking all measures necessary to protect them and our staff.  We are also trying to ensure they continue to have fun!

Thank you for your continued support during this difficult time and please keep all our children and staff in your prayers.

Stay safe and take care

Temporary Suspension of KCH Volunteering Programme

16th March 2020

In light of recent developments and announcements relating to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, the KCH Volunteering Programme has been suspended with immediate effect.  The care and well-being of our children is at the heart of everything we do at KCH, and we hope that you understand the need for us to take this precautionary step.  KCH staff continue to take every available step to protect our children at this time of uncertainty.  Please monitor this page for further information over the coming weeks.  Our best wishes go out to all our volunteers and supporters at this difficult time.

Paul McNeil, Director of Operations and Human Resources, Gloag Foundation / KCH (UK)

Ann Gloag New Year's Honours Announcement

We are delighted to announce that our Founder, Ann Gloag, has been made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to business and charity.  We are all so happy for her.

Ann Gloag said. “I am humbled and grateful to receive this Honour.  Never in my wildest dreams growing up in a council house in Perth did I think this would ever happen.

“I am pleased the Honour mentions my nursing as what I learned as a nurse, dealing with people from all walks of life, helped me succeed in business and has been the cornerstone of my charitable work.

“Whilst this Honour is being given to me, I would like to pay tribute to everyone who helped us build Stagecoach into the success it has become and thank all our staff and supporters of our charities who are too many to mention.”
